would not know anything happened this morning. it was at 3:00 a.m. hundreds of workers here in oakland but also in san leandro and hayward and livermore, formed picket lines. the strike ended at 8:00 a.m. but the effects could be felt all day. >> most people in oakland were probably sound asleep when hundreds of employees put on their vests and refused to go to work. >> it sent a strong message that this company is not going to be above the law and people will call when there is this kind of problem. >> for example, the international long shoremen union spokesman says that waste management is using e verify illegally and picking on immigrant workers. the company says the claim is unfounded. >> the company wasn't supposed to use it without consulting with workers. they violated that rule. they also used it improperly. that resulted in workers losing their jobs. it is also being used by the company to try and threaten and intimidate workers when we

instituteed e verify and identified some employees who did not have the proper requirements to be employed, they were given time to go and correct it, and provide documentation. they had six to eight months to do that. they did not do it. >> david tucker says three employees were fired. the truck drivers were not on strike this morning but joined in solidarity where customs will feel the impact as the trucks rolled out, hours late. >> normally the drivers will hit the streets around 6:00. we are late by a couple of hours but we will be on the road until 6:00 tonight. >> if you live in alameda county and the trash is not picked up by 6:00, waste management says they will be picked up tomorrow. live in oakland, i am katie marzullo. >> happening now, a former san francisco police crime lab technician accused of stealing

drug evidence is expected to change her plea. the 62-year-old woman is in federal court right now set to plead guilty to misdemeanor possession for taking cocaine from the crime laboratory in 2009. the lesser charge that results in the plea deal carry as maximum one year sentence. to previous trials resulted in a hung jury. because of the scandal, 500 drug-related cases were dismissed. >> the army now says they did not prosecute a former soldier on rape charges because there wasn't enough evidence. the former soldier killed to santa cruz police officers. goulet was accused in two rape cases in 2006 but the army says d.n.a. testing failed to link him to the victims. last month, goulet gun down a santa cruz detective elizabeth butler and loran "butch" baker, and the former defense secretary and bay area members of congress are demanding information on how the military handled the case. reuters suspended with pay a

journalist accused of conspiring with a hacker group. the 26-year-old is facing federal charges for allegedly promising hackers access to the website of his former employer "the tribune." later, hackers change add story in the "los angeles times" owned by the tribune. if convicted, he faces up to 25 years in prison. he was a web producer here at abc7 news before joining reuters >> a teacher arrested on charges of possessing child pornography is in the hospital after attempting suicide. he expected to survive an overdose. he was arrested on wednesday at the school where he taught in seaside. a search of the san jose home turned up more than 1,000 video clips and photographs of children who appear to be under 10 years old. he worked in san jose as a substitute teacher from 2008 until just a few weeks ago. the union school district has notified parents at the school where he worked and police are

asking parents to talk to their children about any contact. >> in santa cruz county teams are searching for a missing man who suffered a head injury. the 20-year-old matthew abraham was last seen by his parents on wednesday at their home in scotts valley. searchers will look for him where he liked to bow biking riding. he suffered from a concussion over the weekend. and a year ago a morgan hill teenager has been missing while walking to a bus stop near her home. the prosecutors have charged a man with kidnapping and murder although the body has never been found. tomorrow morning at 9:00, balloons will be released at the search center in morgan hill with a fundraiser held at 1:00 o'clock p.m. can you find more information on our website at abc7news.com.

>> city college of san francisco is facing a deadline today to answer questions about the way taxpayer money is being spent. the school is in danger of losing the accreditation over the issue and students and faculty manner from the campus to city hall yesterday to protest cuts made by the school to balance the budget. city college officials have until today to prove an acredit ting commission they are more financially secure and the commission will decide the school's fate in june. >> the vatican fights back against accusations that are resurfacing about the new pope. just ahead, why the controversy is pitting church officials against some human rights activists. >> yet another problem for carnival cruise line: two ships are malfunctioning at the same time. what shocked passengers are

temperatures in napa and livermore and hayward and los gatos, mid-to-upper 50's. fairfield is warmer at 63 degrees. we will have high clouds and sun today with mild temperatures today, a lot like yesterday. it will be breezy but dry with temperatures tapering and rain running to the forecast, finally, on tuesday and wednesday. today, we will have upper 60's to mid-70's in the santa clara valley with slow and santa clara and milpitas at 70 degrees and menlo park is 71 and most of the peninsula is mid-to-upper 60's and near 60's this afternoon with mid-60's in downtown and south san francisco, and sausalito at 67 and heading up the beach and along the coast, we will be in the upper 50's to near 60 and low-to-mid 70's in the mill valley. oakland is the warm spot at 70 degrees and inland we are at 69 in san ramon but low-to-mid 70's elsewhere and brentwood is at 77 degrees today. tonight, under partly cloudy sky and we will be in the mid-40's to near 50.

we will see some clouds along the coast. some will spill into the bay and look out for patchy fog tomorrow morning. san francisco is 116 -- 162nd st. patrick's day parade tomorrow at 2nd and market. you can see it here if the green, all the way down market and headed over to city hall where it will commence. at 11:00, we will be sunny with high clouds again at 60, and then in the low-to-mid 60's for the better part of the afternoon. if you are headed up to tahoe, no record high temperatures today with 67 yesterday, and 69 wednesday and those were record highs in tahoe and 61 today dropping down to 51. you will get snow in tahoe on tuesday and wednesday and here is the storm, tuesday morning, at 8:00, you can see by wednesday or tuesday evening, there is light rain breaking out and our best chance of rain is tuesday night through wednesday morning, and the rain will slide south and taper on wednesday
